Mignon Fogarty Bio, Life and Career:

Mignon Fogarty, who was born in 1967, is a producer of an educational podcast about English grammar and usage titled Grammar Girl’s Quick and Dirty Tips for Better Writing. She previously worked as a science writer and as a faculty member in journalism at the University of Nevada, Reno. In 2007, iTunes named Grammar Girl’s Quick and Dirty Tips for Better Writing as one of the best podcasts of that year. Additionally, she established the Quick and Dirty Tips podcasting network all by herself. Fogarty earned a bachelor’s degree in English from the University of Washington and a master’s degree in biology from Stanford University.

Both degrees were awarded by the same institution. Her time spent in college was not only spent on academic pursuits but also marked the beginning of her career as an entrepreneur. During this time, she and a college roommate launched their first business together, which involved the production and sale of hair accessories. Mignon has primarily concentrated her career on writing and scientific research. Before she was promoted to her current position as the editorial director of CaregiverZone, she held the positions of editor-in-chief and producer for the LongerLiving website. In later years, she rose through the ranks at GeneticHealth.com to become the editorial director and executive producer.

Absolute Science was a podcast that she produced and co-hosted together with another person. In 2014, she became a faculty member at the Reynolds School of Journalism at the University of Nevada, Reno, where she remained in that role until 2017. During that time, she was the holder of the Donald W. Reynolds Chair in Media Entrepreneurship.CNN ran a piece on Fogarty and her podcast in January 2007, at which time the network referred to her as “a quick and filthy success.

“Mignon Fogarty, a recognized authority in grammar, was a guest on the edition of The Oprah Winfrey Show that aired on March 26, 2007. She appeared on the show in order to respond to a question posed by a viewer on the correct application of possessive apostrophes. The viewer believed that an earlier broadcast should have been titled “Oprah’s and Gayle’s Big Adventure,” but Fogarty clarified that “Oprah and Gayle’s Big Adventure” was an appropriate usage of the compound possessive. She then went on to highlight a few more frequent grammatical mistakes, such as “Effect vs. Effect” and “Who vs. Whom.

In September of 2007, Fogarty and Holt/Holtzbrinck came to an agreement to publish books that were coordinated with the podcasts. iTunes ranked Grammar Girl’s Quick and Dirty Tips to Clean Up Your Writing as one of the best five audiobooks released in 2007, making it the first audiobook to be produced as a result of the agreement between Holt and Holt. Grammar Girl’s Quick and Dirty Tips for Better Writing was Fogarty’s first book to be published in paperback and was published by Holt in July 2008. On the New York Times Best Seller List for the month of August 2008, the book debuted at position number nine.

The audiobook edition was considered for a nomination for a 2009 Audie Award in March of that same year, and in July of that same year, O, The Oprah Magazine included the audiobook as one of its “must-hear audiobooks.” Holt released her second book, titled The Grammar Devotional, in October 2009. This book was published by Holt. Grammar Girl’s 101 Words Every High School Graduate Needs to Know and Grammar Girl’s 101 Misused Words You’ll Never Confuse Again were both published by St. Martin’s Griffin in July 2011 and were bestsellers in the Washington Post during the week of July 31, 2011. Grammar Girl Presents the Ultimate Writing Guide for Students was published by Henry Holt in July 2011 and was selected as a Teachers’ Choice book by the International Reading Association.

Henry Holt also published Grammar Girl’s 101 Words Every High SchoolGrammar Pop a grammar-based word-matching game that was developed by Fogarty and released for the iPad on August 22, 2013. Spark, a radio program that is broadcast on the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, made the announcement that Fogarty would be joining their team for a particular series in the month of August 2009. Talk of the Nation, which is broadcast on NPR, hosted an interview with Fogarty on July 7, 2011, conducted by Neal Conan. During the course of the 17-minute episode, Fogarty answered listeners’ questions and went over several instances from her book, Grammar Girl’s 101 Misused Words You’ll Never Confuse Again (New York: St. Martin’s Griffin, 2011).

In 2012, Fogarty started contributing regular language-related programs to KPCC, which is broadcast on Southern California Public Radio. David Pogue, a technology writer for The New York Times, appeared on his show It’s All Geek to Me on the Discovery Science Channel dressed as Fogarty and lip-synched one of her actual podcasts. This was done as part of a “visual demonstration” of what podcasts were and was included in the episode of the show that was devoted to the iPod. Pogue wore Fogarty’s hair, glasses, and all. In addition, he did the same thing to Legal Lad, who is also a co-host on the Quick and Dirty Tips podcast with Grammar Girl.
