Olu Jacobs Bio, Life, and Career:

Olu Jacobs is the stage and screen name of Oludotun Baiyewu Jacobs, Listen, who was born in Nigeria on 11 July 1942. Jacobs is a film executive as well as an actor.  He has appeared as a leading man in a number of films and television series from the United Kingdom.  Olu Jacobs is widely regarded as one of the best and most well-known African performers of his generation, and this praise comes from a variety of sources. He is generally regarded as a cultural icon and is considered to be one of the most influential African actors of all time, alongside Pete Edochie.

Jacobs has established a name for himself in Nollywood, the movie business of Nigeria. Oludotun Baiyewu Jacobs was born in Egba Alake to parents who were originally from that town. He spent his early formative years in Kano, where he also received his education, and was a student at Holy Trinity School, where he participated in both the debate and theater groups.  After going to one of Chief Hubert Ogunde’s annual music parties at the Colonial Hotel in Kano, he got the idea to try his hand at acting and decided to take a chance at it. After that, he applied for and received a visa, and then he traveled to London to pursue acting training there. Jacobs received his education at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts in London, which is located in England.

In 1972, when the Crucible Theatre in Sheffield had just opened its doors, he had one of his early appearances on stage playing the part of The Boy in the play “A Taste of Honey.” After that, throughout the 1970s, he was a guest on a number of British television programs and series (including The Goodies, Till Death Us, Do Part, Barlow at Large, The Venturers, Angels, 1990, The Tomorrow People, and The Professionals). In 1978, he appeared in Michael Codron’s production of Night and Day, which was written by Sir Tom Stoppard. He played the part of President Mageeba. Since 1989, Jacobs has been married to the actress Joke Silva, who works in Nollywood.

They are parents of children.  When asked why his wife still goes by her maiden name, Jacobs had the following response: “She is an independent person in her own right. When I first met her, she was an actress working under the name Joke Silva; hence, there is no reason why our marriage should now prevent her from using that name in front of her fans. She is known as Miss Joke Silva, although her married name is Joke Jacobs. That is the simplest explanation possible. They started saying whatever they wanted to say. They have even written that we are apart from each other and have done other things like that.

When she is at home, she is Mrs. Joke Jacobs, but when she is at work, she goes by the name Joke Silva.” Although it was widely believed that Olu Jacob had passed away in 2021, he was honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award at Afriff in November of that same year. His wife, Joke Silva, later disclosed his health status in an interview with Chude Jideonwo. She stated that he is suffering from dementia with a Lewy body.
