Randy Meisner Bio, Life, and Career:

Randy Meisner was born on March 8, 1946, in the United States, Randall Herman Meisner is a retired musician, vocalist, and composer who was a founding member of the band the Eagles. Throughout the entirety of Meisner’s professional musical career, his primary responsibilities as a group member and as a session musician were those of bassist and backing high-harmony voice respectively. He not only performed but also contributed to the writing of the Eagles’ number one single, “Take It to the Limit.”Randall His parents, Herman (1911–1995) and Emilie (née Haun) Meisner, were farmers. Herman Meisner was the second child and only son of the couple. He was born in Scottsbluff, Nebraska (1911–2010). The four of his grandparents were all immigrants from Volga German territory. Carol, Randy’s older sister, passed away in 2005. She was the oldest sibling. He remembers that his mother would sing all the time when she was doing housework. George Haun, the man who taught him to play the violin, was his maternal grandfather.

Corn, beans, alfalfa, and sugar beets were among the crops that the Meisner family farmed on their farm. When Randy was 10 years old, he watched Elvis Presley perform on the Ed Sullivan Show, which sparked his interest in learning how to play the guitar. He started taking guitar lessons and playing in bands in the area. When Randy was a student at Scottsbluff High School, one of his teachers suggested that he try his hand at playing the bass. “I used to be really into R&B, and I thought the bass players on the Motown stuff were really talented. They were quite inspirational to me. I am not able to read sheet music. Once I’ve mastered a component, it will be included. My ability to play the bass developed really organically.”

Meisner was a member of a local band called The Dynamics, which would later become known as The Drivin’ Dynamics. Meisner played bass and sang in the band.  between the years 1961 and 1965. In December of 1961, they got their first paying job working in the dance hall at Little Moon Lake, which was located in Torrington, Wyoming. They continued to play there on a regular basis until 1962. Meisner sang the lead vocals for Sam Cooke’s “You Sent Me” on The Drivin’ Dynamics’ debut record, which was an EP consisting of four songs and issued in the latter half of 1962.

It was exclusively pressed in the local area, and just 500 copies were made available. A recording contract was agreed upon between Sully Records of Amarillo, Texas, and The Dynamics in the month of August 1965. They ended up recording three songs, with Meisner taking the lead vocal role on two of them, “One Of These Days” and “So Fine.” The song “So Lovely” was made available as a single and did quite well in sales in the southeast region of the United States. At the beginning of 1966, Meisner relocated to California with a band that was originally known as The Soul Survivors, but would subsequently be known as The Poor (because, as Don Felder later said, “that is what they became”).

As Meisner noted years later, it was a difficult time to make a living “I never owned a car, so getting about required me to walk. On the corner of Sunset and Highland, I was able to sell the Los Angeles Free Press. I averaged roughly five dollars in daily earnings.”  Charlie Greene and Brian Stone, who were also responsible for managing Buffalo Springfield and Sonny & Cher, oversaw The Poor as their band’s managers. Between 1966 and 1967, the band recorded multiple singles on Loma, York, and Decca Records, although they only saw moderate success with their releases. Offices for Loma Records, which was a Warner Bros. subsidiary, were located in the same building as Warner Bros. When Tom Shipley (later of Brewer & Shipley fame) was working as a staff writer for A&M Records in February 1967, he wrote the song “She’s Got the Time, She’s Got the Changes.” This song was recorded by The Poor in February 1967. Gold Star Studios was the location of the recording sessions for three of the songs that were produced by Barry Friedman (also known as “Frazier Mohawk”). The band contributed their musical talents to the track “Study in Motion #1,” which was used in the 1967 film Hell’s Angels on Wheels starring Jack Nicholson.

During the summer of 1967, the band The Poor was given the opportunity to open for The Jimi Hendrix Experience at the Salvation Club in New York City for a total of two weeks. Even though they did get to play a few times, the chance was not what they had imagined it would be, and the members of the band had to threaten management in order to get money for plane tickets back to Los Angeles. In 2003, Rev-Ola issued a CD featuring the music of The Poor. On that album was a song titled “Come Back Baby” which was written by Meisner.  Meisner joined Poco (formerly titled Pogo) in May of 1968, following an audition in which he performed alongside Gregg Allman and Timothy B. Schmit.

Also in the band at the time were former members of Buffalo Springfield, Richie Furay, and Jim Messina.  Although Meisner was a member of the band during the recording of their debut album, Pickin’ Up the Pieces, he left the group shortly before the record was made available to the public. Because only Messina and Furay were going to finish production, his departure was the result of his resentment at being excluded from participating in the final mix playback sessions for the album. This was the reason for his departure. His likeness was erased from the painting that was used on the cover of the album, and it was substituted with that of a dog.  His bass sections and background vocals were kept in the final mix, but his lead vocals were replaced with new ones recorded by George Grantham. The final mix also included his backing vocals.
