Sam Roberts Bio, Life, and Career:

To be specific, Sam Roberts. Born in Montreal on October 2, 1974, this multi-instrumentalist holds a Bachelor of Arts in English from McGill University (1998). Sam Roberts is the eldest of four sons born to his parents, both of whom are originally from South Africa but who settled in Montreal. Roberts started playing the violin at age four, at his own request and kept at it until he was in his early thirties. After he turned 12, his dad got him a Spanish guitar. After discovering the electric guitar at age 13, Roberts immediately began playing in bands.

He was a member of the Happy Death Men in middle school and Screwtape and Grover in high school. Eventually, Roberts enrolled in McGill while playing in bands like William and future Sam Roberts Band members like Eric Fares and James Hall. The band initially went by The Piranha after forming in 1993, but a year after releasing a three-song single under that moniker, they rebranded themselves as Northstar. Northstar broke up after a failed effort to promote their five-song EP in Los Angeles. In 1999, Roberts settled back in his home country of Canada to write, produce, accompany, and record the twelve-song demo, Brother Down.

Roberts and percussionist Jordon Zadorozny went back to six Brother Down recordings in 2001. (Blinker the Star). Again, Roberts contributed vocals and instruments, while Zadorozny handled production, engineering, and percussion. The resulting EP was called The Inhuman Condition. After Universal Music (Canada) representative Linda Bush saw the band perform at Toronto’s Canadian Music Week, the label instantly signed them after hearing their debut album. Roberts was billed as a solo artist, but his on-stage band includes James Hall (bass), Eric Fares (keyboards, guitar, backup vocals), Dave Nugent (guitar, backup vocals), and Corey Zadorozny.

It was in January of 2002 when Sam Roberts was given a recording contract by Universal Records. In July 2002, the Canadian independent record label MapleMusic released the remastered EP, Brother Down. Both “Brother Down” and “Don’t Walk Away Eileen” went on to become massive hits across the country as individual singles. We Were Born in a Flame (2004), his follow-up, was co-produced by Brendan McGuire (producer for Sloan and The Dears) and sold 150,000 copies in Canada. The rocker took home three Junos for the album, rock album, and artist of the year thanks to the success of the album. In 2004, Roberts and his band embarked on a cross-Canada tour supporting the Tragically Hip.

The Sam Roberts Band’s exceptional reputation as a live act dates back to before their breakthrough in 2004. Their popularity in the United States has skyrocketed, and they’ve been featured on numerous late-night talk shows and have critical acclaim for their live performances. In 2008, they toured Europe in support of their album Love at the End of the World, which they did so well that it was certified platinum (2008). They switched out Corey Zadorozny on drums for Josh Trager in 2005. The Sam Roberts Band embarked on a free national tour of Canada in 2010 in honor of the Winter Olympics. The tour included outdoor performances, a show at Vancouver’s Hockey House, and an indoor performance in St. John’s, Newfoundland.

Sam Roberts is an accomplished songwriter who takes influence from a wide range of performers, including the Beatles, the Kinks, the Rolling Stones, and Led Zeppelin (among many others). His music, which has been labeled “power-pop,” combines memorable melodies with driving guitar riffs and strong lyrics.

Roberts writes on politics, love, and interpersonal relationships. The songs are a compilation of his astute insights into life. Despite the pressures from his record label and the preferences of the general public, Sam Roberts has always made it a point to use his fame to spread his beliefs and opinions. Despite his popularity in the pop music industry, he avoids the commercial sector and is known for being a musical purist.

Success at the 2004 Junos followed nominations in 2003 for artist of the year and single of the year for “Brother Down,” which Roberts also performed. His recognition as an artist that year led to his selection as CHART magazine’s Artist of the Year. Roberts has also been honored with the MuchMusic Video Trophies, where he has been nominated for the People’s Choice: Favorite Canadian Artist award in 2003 and 2004 and won three awards for “Hard Road” in 2004. In 2007, his music video for “Bridge to Nowhere” won a Juno, and his album Chemical City was nominated for a Juno in the rock album category. Roberts won two further Junos in 2009, including “Artist of the Year” and “Rock Album of the Year.”

Sam Roberts, a Canadian musician, is well-known for his catchy brand of rock, which fuses the traditional singer/songwriter work of artists like Bob Dylan and Paul Simon with the danceable Brit-pop sound of groups like Primal Scream, Happy Mondays, and Stone Roses. We Were Born in a Flame, released in 2003, was Roberts’ breakout album. It featured the smash hit “Brother Down” and was nominated for three Juno Awards, including Album of the Year. Five of his albums have reached the Top Ten in Canada, including his 2008 Juno Award–winning release Love at the End of the World, as well as 2011’s Collider and 2016’s Terraform.
