Shawn Christensen Bio, Life, and Career:
Shawn Christensen is a musician, filmmaker, podcaster, and artist who resides in the United States. He attended Pratt Institute and received his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in illustration and graphic design there. He graduated with honors. Christensen served as the band Stellastarr’s frontman throughout their indie rock era. In 2013, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences honored him with the Oscar for Best Live Action Short Film for his short film Curfew. Poughkeepsie, New York, United States is where Shawn Christensen spent his childhood and was raised.
Christensen was the only child of his engineer father and librarian mother, who raised him to be an engineer. Christensen was an only child. Christensen acknowledged that The Seventh Seal (1957) was the movie that had the greatest impact on his decision to pursue a career in filmmaking. Christensen went on to receive a degree in graphic design and illustration from Pratt Institute, where he had previously attended. While he was taking weekend acting classes, he became friends with Paul Wesley, who was sixteen years old.
On September 13, 2005, Stellastarr released their second and final album under the RCA record label. The album was titled Harmonies for the Haunted. It was noticed that Christensen’s tone had grown and became more consistent despite his moving between falsetto and baritone vocal registers, which was one of the aspects of Christensen’s evolution as a vocalist that was applauded. In July 2009, Stellastarr released their third and final album under the name Civilized via their personal imprint label Bloated Wife Records. Christensen’s vocals were lauded, and his range was praised for being able to properly deliver deep bellows as well as high falsettos.
The screenplay for the film Abduction was purchased by Lionsgate Films in February 2010, following a week-long bidding war, with the actor Taylor Lautner connected to the project. In July of the following year, production on the movie finally got underway after Lionsgate had engaged screenwriter Jeffrey Nachmanoff to revise the script. Enter Nowhere was a film that was directed by Jack Heller and released in 2011, and Christensen and Dolan are recognized as executive producers. Before it was shown for the first time at the Screamfest Horror Film Festival in October, Lionsgate bought the rights to it so that it could be released directly on DVD.
Christensen decided to pivot his filmmaking career away from screenwriting and toward directing after becoming disillusioned with the results of studios making changes to his screenplays. In 2011, he prepared the screenplay for a short film titled “Curfew,” which he intended to direct and also participate in as an actor. The cast members danced to the original song while Christensen independently composed a single to replace it called “Sophia So Far.” The discussions with the artists behind the dance’s song fell through two days before they were scheduled to film a moving dance scene.
Christensen was the singer vocalist and lead guitarist for a student band named Ghistor, which also featured Amanda Tannen on bass and Arthur Kremer on drums. The band was called Ghistor. The band broke up shortly after Christensen completed his studies at Pratt Institute and received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. After receiving his degree, Christensen went on to develop and sell abstract-realistic paintings, most of which were based on notable individuals in rock music. [ Christensen, Tannen, Kremer, and the newly recruited Michael Jurin, who assumed the role of lead guitarist, came together in March of 2000 to establish the independent rock band Stellastarr (stylized as “Stellastarr*”).
Christensen is credited as the band’s founder. In July, the band gave their first concert, which included Christensen’s original compositions, at Luna Lounge, which is located on the Lower East Side of Manhattan. In May of 2003, Stellastarr obtained a recording contract with RCA Records. This opened the door for Christensen and the other band members to concentrate on a career in music. In September 2003, Stellastarr released their self-titled debut studio album on the RCA record label. The album featured the hit singles “Jenny” and “My Coco.”
His vocals were able to vary from low to high. After the release of the album Civilized, Stellastarr embarked on an unofficial break from performing. Christensen collaborated with Jason Dolan on a feature-length spec script for a drama called Sidney Hall in 2004 while Stellastarr was on the Hot Fuss Tour throughout the United States alongside The Killers. He shared it with Paul Wesley, who then presented it to William Morris Endeavor, which resulted in the signing of both screenwriters. Christensen and Dolan worked together on further spec projects during the middle of the 2000s.
One of these scripts, a psychological thriller titled Enter Nowhere, was the result of their partnership. Christensen wrote screenplays on his own, including a thriller called Abduction that was influenced by Alfred Hitchcock and a science-fiction drama called The Karma Coalition. In 2008, both the screenplays for Sidney Hall and The Karma Coalition were purchased by different production companies, with Scott Free Productions purchasing the screenplay for Sidney Hall and Warner Bros. purchasing the screenplay for The Karma Coalition.
Before editor Christensen took over and edited the film irregularly on his MacBook Pro in his living room over the remainder of 2011, editor Evan Henke worked on Curfew for two weeks. During that time, Henke was assisted by Christensen. After having its world premiere at the Clermont-Ferrand International Short Film Festival in January 2012, the film Curfew went on to receive praise from film critics, screen at a number of festivals, and win accolades for Christensen’s acting, directing, and writing. Curfew was crowned the winner of the Academy Award for Best Live-Action Short Film at the 85th Annual Academy Awards.
