Scott Aukerman Bio, Life, and Career:

Scott David Aukerman is a well-known American author, actor, comedian, television personality, director, producer, and podcast presenter. He was born on July 2, 1970, in the United States. In the later seasons of the sketch series Mr. Show, Aukerman began his career as a writer and performer. Today, he is best known for hosting the monthly comic podcast Comedy Bang! Bang! as well as the IFC original television series of the same name. In addition to being a co-founder of the Earwolf podcast network, Aukerman is the co-creator of the show Between Two Ferns, which he hosts alongside Zach Galifianakis. Aukerman was the child of Burt and Linda Aukerman and was born in Savannah, Georgia. He spent his childhood in Orange County, California, going to Cypress High School and the Orange County School of the Arts, where he majored in acting and musical theatre and wrote plays in his spare time.

Cypress High School is located in Orange County. Aukerman was brought up in a family that placed a strong emphasis on their faith and attended a Baptist church on a regular basis until he went to college.  He was the host of a show on public access television called Centurion Highlights, which was named after the mascot of the institution.  In an interview in 2015, Aukerman stated, “I’m still performing that same show; the only difference is that now I’m doing it with celebrities rather than in my old high school cafeteria.” He collaborated with Adrian Young, who later became the drummer for No Doubt, to form a band that didn’t last very long called The Naked Postmen.

Privates were the working title of the pilot script that Aukerman and Porter penned for NBC in 2009. In the end, the network decided not to pick up the show. In the same year, Aukerman served as the head writer for the 2009 MTV Movie Awards and also created, co-wrote, and executive produced a pilot for Comedy Central titled “The New Andy Dick Show.” In the end, the network decided not to order it to be made into a series. In 2010, Aukerman penned a feature film script for his friend Zach Galifianakis, which was produced by Fox. That same year, he and Patton Oswalt collaborated on the writing of a television pilot for Fox, which the network ultimately decided not to produce. In the latter part of that year, Aukerman became a member of a “writers’ lab” and began composing screenplays for Imagine Entertainment. In 2002, Aukerman and Porter established the alternative comedy showcase Comedy Death-Ray, which took place every Tuesday night at the M Bar in Los Angeles.

The show was quite successful.  Porter and M Bar owner Joe Reynolds have mutual friends, and Porter made a trip to the bar not long after it first opened its doors. Porter, upon observing how few customers were present at M Bar, successfully persuaded Reynolds to allow him to launch a comedy show in an effort to boost revenue. In order to have greater leeway in terms of artistic expression, the play was ultimately relocated to the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre in 2005. On September 11, 2007, Comedy Central Records issued a Comedy Death-Ray CD that was recorded in part in San Francisco at the SF Sketchfest and in part during their fourth-anniversary all-night event in Los Angeles. Both of these shows took place in September. On the CD, Aukerman appeared alongside comedians Patton Oswalt, David Cross, and Paul F. Tompkins, in addition to other CDR regulars.

While he was a student at Orange Coast College in Costa Mesa, he and fellow student B. J. Porter began writing together while they were both participating in a radio show called Lutz Radio, for which they were both responsible for writing and performing the scripts. In 1995, at the request of his friends, Aukerman and Porter began performing at The Comedy Store in Los Angeles under the moniker “The Fun Bunch,” a name that was meant to parody improvisation groups at the time. This was after Aukerman had spent a brief period studying at the Pacific Conservatory of the Performing Arts and touring the country as a musical theatre actor. Porter joined Aukerman in this endeavor. Bob Odenkirk, who was a co-creator of Mr. Show and was in the audience for the second performance, quickly decided to hire the duo to write for and occasionally appear on the show during the fourth season of the show.

Because of this, Aukerman and the rest of the staff were considered for an Emmy award in the year 1999. Aukerman made cameo appearances on the program, the most notable of which was in the Taint Magazine skit, playing the role of model Theo Brixton. After the show was canceled, both Aukerman and Porter went on to write screenplays for movies and television shows, the most notable of which are Run Ronnie Run! and the original draught of the screenplay for the film Tenacious D in The Pick of Destiny. A credit for “Additional Dialogue” was given to both him and Porter in 2004 for their work on the animated feature picture Shark Tale.

They went on to develop a script for a sequel that was never produced, as well as a script for a Shrek spin-off picture based on the character Puss in Boots that was also never made. Kanan Rhodes: Unkillable Servant of Justice is the title of a feature film script that he, Porter, and Odenkirk penned together in 2007. In 2007, MTV Films purchased the rights to the script with the intention of casting Rainn Wilson in the lead role; however, the film has not yet been completed. A self-described “joke record,” Scott Aukerman’s Koo Koo Roo’s Greatest Hits was issued by Aukerman in 2007. The record featured Aukerman and Sarah Silverman Program writer Jon Schroeder shouting over current soft-rock hits. This was made available through AST Records in a restricted release.
