On September 3, 1957, Steven Ralph Schirripa was born in the New York City neighborhood of Bensonhurst. Ralph Schirripa Sr., his father, was an Italian-American bookmaker who had run-ins with the law on multiple occasions. His Jewish mother, Lorraine Schirripa, was his first connection to the religion.
