Sting Bio, Life, and Career:

Gordon Matthew Thomas Sumner CBE, better known by his stage name Sting, is an English musician and actor. He was born on October 2, 1951. Beginning in 1977 and continuing until the band’s dissolution in 1986, he was the frontman, songwriter, and bassist for the new wave rock band the Police. In 1985, he began his career as a solo artist and has since incorporated styles such as rock, jazz, reggae, classical, new age, and worldbeat into his compositions.

Sting has received 17 Grammy Awards throughout his career as a solo musician and as a member of the band The Police. He won Song of the Year for “Every Breath You Take,” three Brit Awards, including Best British Male Artist in 1994 and Outstanding Contribution in 2002, a Golden Globe Award, and an Emmy Award, and he has been nominated four times for the Academy Award for Best Original Song. He was presented with a BMI Award in 2019 in recognition of “Every Breath You Take” which became the song that has been played on the radio the most throughout the entirety of radio history.

Both the Songwriters Hall of Fame and the Ivor Novello Award for Lifetime Achievement were bestowed upon Sting in the year 2002 by the British Academy of Songwriters, Composers, and Authors. In addition, Sting was inducted into the Hall of Fame. As a member of the Police, he was honored with induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in the year 2003. The recording was the category that earned him a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in the year 2000. Gordon Matthew Thomas Sumner was born on October 2, 1951, at the Sir G B Hunter Memorial Hospital in Wallsend, Northumberland, England.  He is the eldest of four children to his parents, Audrey (née Cowell), a hairdresser, and Ernest Matthew Sumner, a milkman, and engineer.  Matthew Thomas Sumner was the first child to be born to his parents. He spent his childhood in close proximity to the shipyards in Wallsend, which had an influence on him. It was when he was a child that he saw the Queen waving at him from a Rolls-Royce that he was motivated to change his career path away from working in shipyards and toward a more glamorous profession.

When he was 10 years old, he was “infatuated” with an antique Spanish guitar that had been left for him by a friend of his father’s who had emigrated. He had helped his father deliver milk. It was in the city of Newcastle upon Tyne that he received his education at St. Cuthbert’s Grammar School. He went to nightclubs like Club A’Gogo to watch bands like Cream and Manfred Mann, who had a significant impact on his musical style. After graduating from high school in 1969, he initially attended the University of Warwick in Coventry; however, he dropped out after only one semester.

After gaining experience in the field as a bus conductor, building laborer, and tax officer, he went to the Northern Counties College of Education, which is now known as Northumbria University, from 1971 to 1974 to earn his teaching certification.  Two years of his teaching career were spent in St. Paul’s First School in Cramlington. After relocating from Newcastle to London in January 1977, Sting became a founding member of the Police alongside Stewart Copeland and Henry Padovani, who was soon succeeded by Andy Summers. They had five albums that reached number one on the UK charts between 1978 and 1983, and they earned a total of six Grammy Awards and two Brit Awards (for Best British Group and for Outstanding Contribution to Music).

The band’s first sound was punk-influenced, but later on, they shifted their musical direction toward reggae rock and minimalist pop. Their very last record, titled Synchronicity, was submitted for consideration for five Grammy Awards in 1983, including Album of the Year.
