The Weeknd Bio, Life, and Career:

Abel Makkonen Tesfaye was born on February 16, 1990 in the city of Toronto, which is located in the province of Ontario. He is the only child of Ethiopian immigrants Makkonen Tesfaye and Samrawit Hailu, who divorced shortly after his birth. His parents’ names are Makkonen Tesfaye and Samrawit Hailu. His mother and his grandmother took care of him when he was growing up in what was then the city of Scarborough.

According to an interview he gave with Rolling Stone in 2015, he described his connection with his father as “cold.” “I faintly remember seeing him when I was six, and then again when I was around 11 or 12 years old, and by that time, he already had a new family and children. I can’t even tell you where he lived because I only ever saw him for a few hours at a time. I have no doubt that he is a nice human being. I never judged him. He was not an abusive person, nor was he an alcoholic, nor was he a complete jerk. Simply put, he wasn’t there.” Tesfaye was brought up in the Ethiopian Orthodox faith by his parents.

When asked by Variety in the year 2020 whether or not he was still religious, he responded, “I don’t know…everything is a test, and if you are religious or spiritual, you have to go through things.” His grandmother was the one who taught him Amharic, hence it’s considered to be his native tongue. After some time, he was able to perfect his command of the French language by enrolling in an immersion program. He received his additional education at the Birchmount Park Collegiate Institute as well as at the West Hill Collegiate Institute.

Tesfaye quit school when he was 17 years old and moved into an apartment in the Parkdale neighborhood with two other friends, one of whom was his best buddy and is now the creative director of the company. As a result of their hedonistic way of life, he has compared this time period to the setting of the 1995 film Kids, albeit without the presence of AIDS. He has also been homeless, and during this period he spent time in jail multiple times, both of which helped him “smarten up” and “concentrate” on his life’s goals.

Tesfaye was a frequent drug user and abuser, abusing chemicals like ketamine, cocaine, MDMA, magic mushrooms, and cough syrup among other illicit substances. In December 2016, he said that writing music was “a crutch” for him when he was under the influence of narcotics. During an interview for the cover of GQ in the month of August 2021, he referred to himself as “sober lite,” which means that he has given up all forms of substance abuse with the exception of marijuana.

In addition to this, he admitted that he does on occasion consume alcoholic beverages, saying: “I used to drink quite a lot, but now I don’t drink nearly as much as I used to. The allure of imbibing alcoholic beverages is lacking.” As a leading figure in modern popular music, he is most known for his unorthodox music production, artistic reinventions, and characteristic usage of the falsetto range that he pioneered.

His list of accolades includes nominations for the Academy Award and the Primetime Emmy Award, in addition to four Grammy Awards, twenty Billboard Music Awards, twenty-two Juno Awards, six American Music Awards, two MTV Video Music Awards, a Latin Grammy Award, and twenty-two Juno Awards. He has also won four Grammy Awards.

Tesfaye was born in Toronto and spent his childhood there. He began his career in 2009 by secretly uploading music to YouTube. Two years later, he co-founded the XO record label and released the mixtapes House of Balloons, Thursday, and Echoes of Silence. These mixtapes helped him achieve attention for his style of modern and alternative R&B as well as the mystique that surrounded his identity.

After signing a recording contract with Republic Records in 2012, he reissued the mixtapes as part of the compilation album titled Trilogy. Kiss Land (2013), his first full-length studio album, arrived at number two on the Billboard 200 chart in the United States. He explored dark waves with this record. When the album was released, Tesfaye began contributing to the soundtracks of movies. His song “Earned It,” which was featured in the film Fifty Shades of Grey (2015), was nominated for an Oscar Award for Best Original Song and won the Grammy Award for Best R&B Performance.

Tesfaye achieved both critical and commercial success with his second album, Beauty Behind the Madness (2015), which featured more of a pop-leaning. The album debuted at number one in the United States, featured the top-charting singles “Can’t Feel My Face” and “The Hills” on the United States Billboard Hot 100 chart, and won the Grammy Award for Best Urban Contemporary Album as well as receiving a nomination for Album of the Year. Similar commercial success greeted his trap-infused third studio album Starboy (2016), which also featured the number-one hit in the United States with the same name and “Die For You.”

The album also received the Grammy Award for Best Urban Contemporary Album. Tesfaye experimented with new wave and dream pop in his highly acclaimed fourth studio album, titled After Hours (2020). This album featured the chart record-setting hit “Blinding Lights” as well as the number-one singles “Heartless” and “Save Your Tears” in the United States.  His fifth album, which was inspired by dance-pop and was titled Dawn FM (2022), had the track “Take My Breath,” which reached number 10 in the US.

“Blinding Lights” is currently recognized as the best Hot 100 song in the annals of Billboard’s history and became the song with the most streams in the history of Spotify. In the year 2020, Tesfaye was named by Time magazine as one of the most influential persons in the world. In the year 2023, Guinness World Records recognized Tesfaye as the “most popular artist” in the world. In 2021, he was given the position of World Food Programme Goodwill Ambassador in recognition of his work as an advocate for racial equality and food security.
