Michael Damian Thomas Bio, Life, and Career:

Michael Damian Thomas is a magazine editor and podcaster based in the United States. In his role as co-publisher and co-editor-in-chief of Uncanny Magazine alongside his wife, Lynne M. Thomas, Thomas has been honored with not one but seven Hugo Awards, as well as the British Fantasy Award and the Parsec Award. Also, he has been an outspoken supporter of the rights of handicapped children in the state of Illinois. In the school year 1992, Thomas was a student at the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy (IMSA), a public magnet school located in Aurora, Illinois. In 2018, IMSA honored him with the Alumni Titan Award for being “an eager and energetic champion who has engaged greatly in the IMSA community.”

This award was given in recognition of his accomplishments as “an enthusiastic and energetic champion.”After receiving his degree from Parkland College in 1998, he became involved in the publication of the Parkland literary journal. Between the years 2012 and 2013, Thomas served as the managing editor of Apex Magazine, and he is currently an associate editor at Mad Norwegian Press. Along with Lynne M. Thomas, he launched Uncanny Magazine in 2014 with the intention of providing “a home for emotionally powerful, eloquently written, experimental stories and intriguing nonfiction” as well as poetry. He is also a contributor to various podcasts, such as the SF Squeecast with Elizabeth Bear, Paul Cornell, Seanan McGuire, and Catherynne M. Valente and Down and Safe, Blake’s 7 podcasts with Amal El-Mohtar, Scott Lynch, and L. M. Myles. He co-hosts the podcast that bears the same name.

Thomas has been the co-editor of several collections of short stories and essays, some of which include Queers Dig Time Lords: A Celebration of Doctor Who by the LGBTQ Fans Who Love It (2014, with Sigrid Ellis), Glitter & Mayhem (2013, with John Klima and Lynne M. Thomas), and The Best of Uncanny.  Glitter & Mayhem was published in 2013 by John Klima and Lynne M. Thomas (2019, with Lynne M. Thomas). Thomas has developed a strong interest in topics pertaining to people with disabilities. He worked on the planning committee for the Aicardi Syndrome Family Conference as well as led the City of DeKalb Advisory Commission on Disability and the DeKalb County Local Interagency Networking Council.

The Thomases and Mary Robinette Kowal collaborated in 2017 to create the “SF/F Convention Accessibility Pledge,” which is a list of three fundamental accessibility requirements for signers’ participation in conventions as participants, panelists, or guests.
