Steve DeOssie Bio, Life, and Career:

Born on November 22, 1962, Steve Leonard DeOssie is a retired American football linebacker and long snapper who played in the National Football League (NFL) for the Dallas Cowboys, New York Giants, New York Jets, and New England Patriots. He also played college football at the University of Oklahoma. He attended Boston College and was on the football team there. Don Bosco Technical High School in Boston, Massachusetts, is no longer in operation, and DeOssie played for head coach Bob Currier while he was a student there. In addition to that, he was a catcher for the baseball team. In football, baseball, and basketball, he was recognized as an All-State performer.

He went on to play football at Boston College, where he was a four-year starter at middle linebacker and the team’s long snapper. He accepted a football scholarship from the school. At the beginning of his career, he saw action as a fullback in plays that involved a short amount of yardage. Which featured a crucial stop that allowed BC to pull off the upset against #11 Stanford University.

He led the Eagles to their first bowl game in 41 years, the Tangerine Bowl, while also recording a career-high 135 tackles during his junior season with the team. Even though he was hindered by a separated shoulder during his final year, he still managed to rack up 111 tackles. After sliding due to the fact that he was selected by the New Jersey Generals in the first round (15th overall) of the 1984 USFL Draft, DeOssie was picked up by the Dallas Cowboys in the fourth round (110th overall) of the 1984 NFL Draft. This was the first time he had been available.

In addition to serving as the long snapper for punts while he was a rookie, he also served as the backup linebacker behind fellow rookie Eugene Lockhart. He made 8 tackles for the defense. His teammates came up with the nickname “Barney Rubble” for him. A few years later, they gave him the nickname “beach ball” because of the numerous different colors that would appear on his face when exposed to the sun.

His primary contributions came on special teams when he served as long snapper for the unit and also covered kickoffs. In addition to that, he participated in the defense of the short-yardage and goal-line situations. In 1988, he had a total of 20 tackles for the special teams, which put him in third place on the squad. He finished the season with a total of 26 tackles, both of which came during his time as an outside linebacker, where he made his first two starts.

In a news conference held on August 30, 2011, Patriots head coach Bill Belichick explained how the Cowboys took advantage of DeOssie’s ability to block and snap the ball on the same play, which allowed them to spread out their punt formations and reduce the number of blockers they used, so revolutionizing the punt game.

He had disagreements with the new coaching staff that had been brought in by Jimmy Johnson in June of 1989, which led to him being dealt to the New York Giants in return for their sixth-round draft choice (#163-Derrick Walker) in the 1990 NFL Draft. Many Cowboys fans and commentators rank him as one of the franchise’s all-time greats on special teams.

In 1989, DeOssie was one of the inside linebackers that started for the team in its 3-4 scheme. He was mostly used as a run defender throughout his time with the organization. He suffered an injury to his left toe during the third game of the season, which was played against the Phoenix Cardinals. The injury necessitated surgery, and as a result, he was out for the next seven games, not returning until November 15.

In 1990, he started 13 games for the Giants and was a key contributor to their victory in Super Bowl XXV. On December 6, 1992, he was put on the injured reserve list after suffering an injury. On November 10, 1993, new head coach Dan Reeves released him from the team by waiving his participation.
